When Tim Shannon, CJF, AWCF, pulls up a radiograph on his phone right in the middle of a training barn, he’s not only creating a great impression, he’s also providing the kind of service that sets him apart.

And EQUINET, the business app for farriers, is making it possible.

“I make an effort to pull the EQUINET app up in front of clients,” Tim says. “It helps them see, hey, this guy’s organized, he’s current, he’s using updated technology.”

Tim has always had that kind of reputation under a horse—and now he’s bringing it to his business as well.

right on the spot.”—Tim Shannon

A master farrier—juggling business demands
Over the past four decades, Tim has built a practice that serves everyone from elite competitors to backyard horse owners. He’s supported his clients’ horses through multiple Olympics, World Equestrian Games, and Pan Am Games on both the U.S. and Canadian teams. He’s a trusted clinician and renowned competitor.

But for most of his career, the business side of Tim’s work was far less streamlined than his shoeing.

For years, he managed most of his schedules and notes on paper. Eventually he started using iForgeAhead software—but even that didn’t help as much as he’d hoped. “I never liked its calendar function,” says Tim, “and it wasn’t intuitive enough for horse record keeping. It was too clunky. I only ended up using it for billing and invoicing.”

Instead, Tim held his business together with a combination of paper notes in his backpack, saved notes in his phone’s contact list, saved radiographs in his email folders, and renamed screenshots saved for later reference.

It worked, but not well.
“I’d get home and think there were still things I needed to do, but...there weren’t. I realized everybody’s already scheduled, everybody’s already invoiced, my notes are finished. I'm done.”

A promising solution
So when Tim heard about EQUINET, the new business app for farriers, developed by Mustad, it sounded like everything he’d been looking for.

Now he’s been using the app for nearly two years, and Tim says it’s changed the way he works.

He particularly loves that EQUINET supports what he calls “the triad” of farrier business needs—scheduling, entries, and invoicing—all in one place.

“I can schedule an appointment, bring up that appointment, click on the horse, and enter some notes about that horse all in one easy flow,” he says. “Then I can click right from there into invoicing, create the invoices, and I’m done.”
A whole new way of working
Using the EQUINET app, Tim has been able to streamline his workflow. Instead of saving his paperwork for the end of the work day, he now completes entries in EQUINET between horses.

“I try to do it at the client’s place before I leave,” he says. “I schedule, I invoice, and I make any notes in EQUINET right on the spot.”

Soon, Tim noticed EQUINET was freeing up his evenings.

“I’d get home and think there were still things I needed to do,” he says, “but...there weren’t. I realized everybody’s already scheduled, everybody’s already invoiced, my notes are finished. I’m done.”
Next-level collaboration
Perhaps the biggest change has been how Tim works with veterinarians.

“When a vet sends me reports or radiographs about a horse I’m shoeing next week, I can screenshot it all, select the horse in EQUINET, and add the screenshots,” he says. “Then, when I get to that horse next week, it’s already in there, and I look really professional.”

Before EQUINET, accessing that information meant digging through email folders or scrolling through renamed files.
The professional impact has been significant.
Now, when a trainer approaches Tim at a barn and says, “Hey, did the vet send you the radiographs yet?”, he can just pull out his phone, open the EQUINET app, and have a conversation right there.

“This level of organization matters,” says Tim, “especially when you’re working with upper-level horses. The vets and farriers need to be on the same page—and EQUINET makes that easy.”.
And Tim says people are noticing.
“When vets see that I can pull my phone out of my hip pocket and have all this information at my fingertips, I look so much more professional,” says Tim. “And that leads to more business.”
