THIS FARRIER FINALLY FOUND A BUSINESS TOOL THAT CAN KEEP UP WITH HER PACE.

After trying everything from Excel spreadsheets to equine dental apps, western Pennsylvania farrier Loren Altman discovered EQUINET—and finally found the tools she'd been looking for.
Meet Loren
Farrier name: Loren Altman, CF
Business name: Twin Lakes Farrier Service
Specializing in: Dressage and Hunter Jumpers
Located in: Western Pennsylvania
Size of her team: 1
Horses seen per month: Approx. 150
Shoeing since: 2008
EQUINET user since: 2024

What would Loren say to a farrier considering EQUINET?

“I would definitely recommend EQUINET. People don't realize how easy it is to use and how easy it is to set up. I spent more time doing things the other way than I do now with EQUINET.”
Loren Altman, CF, isn’t afraid to start over. In fact, she’s started her farrier business three separate times.

As a young farrier, she built a thriving business in western Pennsylvania, which she then left to embrace Texas rodeo life. “I’d always wanted to see what Texas was all about,” she says.

There, on a ranch, she cared for team roping horses and built another full book of business from scratch. Then she moved back home to be closer to family.

Now that she’s settled back in Pennsylvania, Loren is busy again with another new—and higher-end—book of dressage and hunter jumper horses.

She’s looking for any ways she can find to optimize her time, and she finally found a business tool that can help her do so.
Loren knew she needed better notes—that much was clear.
With each iteration of her business, Loren's standards for professionalism have increased. As she began to work with more sophisticated clients, she recognized a gap between how farriers typically manage their practices versus how other equine professionals do.

“We do a terrible job of keeping track of what's actually happening,” says Loren. “ I might know a client’s horse lost a shoe a couple weeks ago, but if I didn’t write it down, I darn sure don't remember which one it was.”

For someone who’s successfully built multiple businesses, note-taking isn’t just about staying organized—it’s a competitive advantage.
The vets have their SOAP notes. I thought there should be something like that for farriers.

"Being able to have appropriate notes and correlate events is very important," she says. "If you can look back and say, 'Hey, I remember last year your horse had this issue'—maybe there's a correlation. That sets you apart from somebody else."
“I tried so many things. I asked so many people”
Loren knew exactly what she needed in a tool—a simple way to capture all her notes, photos, and records. She just couldn't find a tool that delivered.

"I tried so many things. I asked so many people," she recalls.

She tried creating custom Excel spreadsheets and programming them to change colors based on which horses were due for shoeing. She tried multiple farrier apps. She even tried an equine dental app, thinking its client organization structure might work.

Nothing worked.
“This sounds like exactly what I need”
The breakthrough for Loren came at an AFA convention when farrier Tim Shannon, CJF, AWCF, showed her something new: the EQUINET app, which, at the time, was still in development.

“This sounds like exactly what I need,” she told Tim.

So when EQUINET launched in the U.S. in early 2024, Loren was ready. "I was very excited," she
laughs. She was one of the first U.S. farriers to start implementing EQUINET into her business.

And, she says, it’s exceeded her expectations.

The ability to instantly access detailed notes and histories for her horses has transformed how she works and how she communicates with clients. And it’s saving her time.
I think, as a whole, the EQUINET app will help the farrier community be viewed more as professionals.
-Loren Altman, CF
Elevating the entire farrier profession
For Loren, professional organization isn't just about personal success—it's about changing perceptions of farriers as a whole.

"I really do think farriers in general should take better notes. It helps us all be viewed more as professionals," she says. "Sometimes we kind of get the short end of the stick on that because we don't have a veterinary degree."

But, says Loren, presentation matters.

"You can't come in with papers flying everywhere, not even know what horse you're seeing, and expect to be seen as professional."

That’s why, when Loren uses the EQUINET app on her iPad, she deliberately makes it visible to clients. She says clients notice, and it helps her look professional.

As someone who’s relied on reputation and word of mouth to build her business multiple times, Loren knows how valuable that is.
Beyond just professional benefits—the app helps her build personal connection.
Loren says the EQUINET app also enables relationship-building with her clients—at a level that wasn't practical before.

"I'll even write things in my notes about clients, like their kids' birthdays or other personal details," she says. "Little stuff like that I would have never done before, because it would have just taken forever to figure out where to put that note. Even those little things help with client relationships."
Getting a whole team of farriers on the same page
Loren's next business challenge is growth. With demand exceeding what she can handle alone, she's planning to bring in an additional associate for her business, Twin Lakes Farrier Service.

"EQUINET will be super helpful with that,” she says, “because then everybody will be on the same
page. If I pull in to do a horse that maybe my associate has been doing, I would have all their notes on everything. Anybody in my company could come in and have all of the history on that horse."
“I would definitely recommend EQUINET.”
When other farriers ask Loren about EQUINET, her recommendation is clear.

"I would definitely recommend it,” she says. “People don't realize how easy it is to use and how
easy it is to set up. I spent more time doing things the other way than I do now with EQUINET.”

For a farrier like Loren, who’s managing 150 horses with plans to grow her team, every tool has to
earn its place. If it’s not saving time—or if it’s making her job harder—she won’t be using it.

Loren says EQUINET has delivered exactly what she was looking for.
